Current delays in asylum applications

The US normally offers international protection through political asylum and refuge to vulnerable communities and immigrant families who need it most.

However, the country’s immigration sector is going through an uncertain time for two main reasons:

1. The Trump administration does not completely agree with mass immigration, even through legal processes.
   Therefore, the president intends to reduce the number of foreigners entering the country.
2. The arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic helped increase restrictions and requirements in the main immigration processes.

This has tremendously affected the established process to apply for political asylum. For instance, when the massive Coronavirus outbreak reached the US, President Trump announced the closure of borders and banned immigrants from entering the country for nearly three consecutive months, including asylum seekers.

Therefore, the delay in asylum applications is alarming and thousands of families must remain in Mexico under the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP).

They live in temporary shelters, usually overcrowded, where they do not always have access to food, water, medicine, bathrooms, and decent living conditions.

That is the reason why legislator Henry Cuellar requested approval to hire 100 immigration judges to serve on the southern borders of the US in order to expedite applications for political asylum.

100 immigration judges will work in Texas

Legislator Cuellar requested the hiring of 100 immigration judges who will work in the southern borders of the country and it was approved, which is very favorable news for asylum seekers.

Cuellar exposes several reasons that led him to make this request. Let’s see some of them:

• There are 1.2 million immigration cases behind schedule due to the global Coronavirus pandemic.
• Just in Texas, there are 189,000 pending immigration applications.
• The current waiting time for the resolution of an immigration application is 759 days. In Texas, it is 793 days.
• The living conditions of asylum seekers are not adequate and the US immigration system should speed up processes to protect the health of the most vulnerable communities.

Aside from that, Cuellar states: “By employing more immigration judges, we are able to properly adjudicate the individuals and families entering our country. Promoting the rule of law and enforcing due process is essential to America’s democracy.”

Adding to that, the legislator assures that, if the country’s immigration system does not improve, a massive wave of illegal immigration will be generated in the coming months.
