Acting DHS Secretary Comments on Trump-Sponsored Naturalization Ceremony
The naturalization ceremony during the RNC
During the week of August 24, 2020, the Republican National Convention (RNC) took place, where the presidential candidate belonging to the Republican political party, in this case the current President Donald Trump, presents his main proposals to win the elections in November and gives multiple speeches together with his cabinet of senior officials.
One of the main pillars of President Trump’s political campaign is related to the immigration sector and to multiple action plans that seek to reduce the number of foreigners entering the country and eradicate illegal immigration.
One of the most controversial aspects of this RNC is that President Trump, despite his radical stance on immigration, attended and sponsored a Naturalization Ceremony, where he granted American citizenship to five foreigners of different nationalities.
To give a brief overview, Naturalization Ceremonies are the last step immigrants must take to become US citizens. It means that after the ceremony, they have exactly the same rights as any other local citizen, including the right to vote in the country’s presidential elections.

The current controversy over the naturalization ceremony
This naturalization ceremony unleashed a gigantic controversy among critics, activist organizations and immigrant rights advocates, who argue that they do not understand what the real purposes of the Trump administration are to sponsor this immigration event.
On the one hand, dozens of activists state that the current administration of the US used the naturalization ceremony as a means to win more voters and secure a second presidency. However, they assure that, if President Trump wins re-election, he will continue to increase restrictions on the immigration sector and deport immigrants without following established protocols.
On the other hand, there are dozens of critics who argue that the Trump administration has always been focused on reducing illegal immigration to have more control over local resources, but that he does support legal immigration despite the multiple restrictions implemented during the massive outbreak of Coronavirus.

Wolf intervenes and defends the naturalization ceremony
On Sunday, August 30, Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Chad Wolf, defended and praised the presence of President Donald Trump at the naturalization ceremony during the RNC.
Wolf said that when the ceremony took place, he did not know it was going to appear in the RNC. In fact, he stated that “It was an official event by the White House uploaded to a public YouTube channel. Anyone, any individual, organization, or political party can pull down that video and do with it as they wish.”
Therefore, he assures that the intervention of the president in this ceremony does not violate any law nor is it an action plan for the campaign of the Trump administration. On the contrary, the president showed his support for legal immigration.
