Activist Group Calls for Permanent Benefits for TPS Holders
TPS for immigrants who need international protection
It is no secret that the US is a multicultural country that opens its doors to thousands of foreigners annually, who have the possibility to gain work experience, seek economic stability, request international protection through humanitarian programs, create entrepreneurship projects, study or reunite with their families.
For instance, speaking specifically about humanitarian alternatives, immigrants from certain countries can apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which allows them to legally reside in the US for a period of time previously established by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
DHS is in charge of choosing TPS beneficiary countries and their permits’ duration. Currently, there are 10 countries protected by this migratory benefit, which are experiencing ongoing armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and other risky situations. In fact, DHS recently extended TPS, until October 4, 2021, for citizens of 6 countries.
This was encouraging news for thousands of immigrants covered by TPS as many of them were allowed to reside in the US until January 2021 and feared deportation amid the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.
However, despite the fact that DHS extended TPS for most countries included in the immigration program, activist groups and immigrant rights advocates ask for permanent benefits for TPS holders, who, in many cases, have resided in the US for several years or even decades, and returning to their countries would represent an imminent risk.

Humanitarian organization calls for long-term stability for TPS holders
The Family Action Network Movement (FANM), a Haitian activist group based in Florida, celebrated DHS’s decision to extend TPS until 2021. The director of this organization states that this news is truly positive for TPS recipients, who were extremely concerned about the Trump administration’s actions against this immigration benefit.
However, FANM also states that temporary protection for TPS holders could jeopardize their future in the US and force them to return to dangerous environments, where their integrity would be at risk.
Therefore, the director of FANM states that the US Senate must pass “the Dreams and Promise Act” and that “TPS recipients need permanent and not temporary protection (…) We will not stop until we have a path to permanent residency for all TPS holders.”
Adding to that, FANM and other humanitarian organizations hope that with the new administration (Biden-Harris), the local immigration system will have a more humane structure and offer more alternatives, not only for the most vulnerable immigrant communities, but also for highly qualified foreign workers and family members of American citizens or legal permanent residents.
