Activists against immigration policies
President Trump wants to ban immigration
Due to the health crisis caused by COVID-19, Trump’s government asked to stop immigration completely for at least 60 days while the contagion peak decreases in the US.
The president signed a decree to block immigration in the country on Wednesday, April 22, 2020.
His main argument is that without immigration, local workers have more opportunities during the pandemic.
The restrictive measure states that the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) cannot receive applications for Green Card or temporary work visas.
The decision is highly controversial among immigrant rights advocates and all foreigners who need to come to work and/or reside legally in the country.
It is clear that borders must remain closed due to COVID-19, however, immigrant rights advocates argue that temporarily banning immigration is an extremist and arbitrary policy.
The activists’ point of view
Thousands of activists have spoken out against President Trump’s social media announcements regarding immigration.
They have various opinions on the negative repercussions generated by the immigration ban.
- This measure vetoes thousands of foreign workers who could be of great help during the health crisis. Especially workers in the health sector.
- After the Coronavirus outbreak, the world must overcome an economic crisis unprecedented in the recent history of humanity. Therefore, thousands of foreign workers can help to boost the country’s economy, production, and development.
- Thousands of immigrants are waiting for the opportunity to apply for their Green Card and have invested time and money to achieve this goal.
- Rural workers traveling from Mexico keep local markets alive and provide food for thousands of American families.
- This decision is already affecting local companies, as there are not enough workers to satisfy market demands.
- Foreign workers represent a very high percentage of the US workforce. This means that local production could be reduced considerably if work visas are no longer issued, even if it is temporarily.
Immigrant rights advocates argue that these are some of the repercussions that could be caused by the decision to temporarily block immigration.
Other than that, one of the University of Houston teachers (who is also an activist) stated that this decision appears to be Trump’s strategy to be reelected in the upcoming presidential elections.
Also, the decision to close the borders permanently for 60 days is alarming since the US is one of the busiest countries in the world and is a key player for the global economy.
Therefore, this policy may have negative repercussions for the country’s progress.
The activists’ recommendation
According to the activists, the best solution is to take the correct measures depending on how the situation progresses in the world. They recommend taking one step at a time.
They argue that making accelerated decisions and temporarily limiting immigration can only wreak havoc and extend the global crisis. It also increases fear and anguish among immigrant communities and local companies.
