Activists call on Democrats to protect undocumented immigrants

Now that the Biden administration is trying to promote the first comprehensive immigration reform in decades, several activist groups and immigrant rights advocates are also calling on Democratic members of Congress and the Senate to use their power to offer permanent relief from deportation to undocumented immigrants.

This petition mainly involves:

• Dreamers, who are young immigrants who came to the US without legal documentation as minors.
• Beneficiaries of TPS (Temporary Protected Status), who are immigrants who have temporary protection from deportation because their countries are going through precarious situations such as ongoing armed conflict or natural disasters.
• Undocumented farm workers, who are essential for of the US food supply chain.

Now that the US House of Representatives is largely made up of Democratic members and they are also a narrow majority in the Senate, several activist groups hope that Biden’s proposals to offer permanent protection to undocumented immigrants will be passed more easily.

In fact, the executive director of one of the activist groups states that Democrats have “a moral and political obligation to see it through (…) We are saying clearly to Democrats that they must use every available pathway (…) to ensure that we have protections for undocumented people.”

American Dream and Promise Act

Activist groups calling on Congress to offer permanent protection to undocumented immigrants state that the decision by Democratic members to reintroduce the “American Dream and Promise Act“ is quite hopeful news. This bill would grant conditional permanent residency to Dreamers and TPS beneficiaries for 10 years.

This Act was first introduced in 2019 and passed by the House, but since the Senate was controlled primarily by the Republican political party, it was never implemented. Therefore, activist groups urge Democratic House and Senate members to use this Act to offer a permanent solution to undocumented immigrants, who are also essential workers.

They state that Democratic members should seize the opportunity that a Democratic president is leading the White House and make as much progress as possible on the local immigration system.

Aside from the “American Dream and Promise Act,” activist groups are urging Democratic members to introduce another bill that benefits undocumented farmworkers.
