Activists Urge Biden to Act Soon on Immigration
Immigration as a pillar of Biden’s political campaign
It is no secret that the way the Trump administration handled immigration over the past four years has sparked a gigantic wave of controversy among the American population, especially among activist groups, humanitarian organizations, immigrant rights advocates, experts, critics and immigration attorneys.
However, the future of immigration in the US is changing as the local population elected Joe Biden, who belongs to the Democratic political party, as the country’s 46th president. Biden promised, among many other things, to remove Trump’s restrictions on legal immigration processes, handle irregular immigration in a different way, and reform the entire immigration system.
Considering the first actions of President Biden and his cabinet since Inauguration Day (January 20, 2021), we can see that immigration is indeed an essential issue for the new administration.
Initially, the Biden administration has focused on suspending, revoking and rescinding Trump’s restrictive policies, which substantially transformed the local immigration system and hindered processes available for foreigners to come to the US, from people in need of international protection and who request political asylum, to highly qualified foreign workers in sectors such as science and technology.

Activists and immigrant communities hope for more changes on immigration
Despite the fact that President Biden has issued at least 9 executive orders and memoranda to remove Trump’s restrictive policies in less than a month in office, several immigration attorneys and activists state that his administration has yet to remove other rules to help immigrant populations.
To give a specific example, in June 2020, the Trump administration suspended the issuance of new Green Cards until 2021. Adding to that, before leaving office, former President Trump extended this restriction until March 31, 2021.
To understand the issue at hand, it is important to clarify that Green Cards grant lawful permanent residence to immigrants who meet mandatory requirements. However, many immigrants who applied for a Green Card before the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the North American territory and whose applications were approved, have not been able to come to the US due to current limitations. This includes Diversity Visa Lottery winners.
Annually, the Diversity Visa Lottery randomly grants 50,000 Green Cards to foreigners from different countries, which do not have a high immigration rate in the US.
According to the testimony of several winners of the Diversity Visa Lottery, they have not been able to enter the US due to restrictions implemented by the Trump administration during the health crisis. Therefore, dozens of activists urge the Biden government to remove more restrictions on immigration processes to allow foreigners, who properly followed legal processes and meet the mandatory requirements, to come to the country.
