Advocates Celebrate Biden’s Decisions on Immigration
Joe Biden’s promises regarding immigration
Immigration is quite a controversial issue among the American population and members of local governments. Hence, immigration usually plays an important role during the US presidential elections and political campaigns.
For instance, immigration was an essential and relevant issue for American citizens during the most recent presidential elections, even though the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic took most of the candidates’ attention.
The most recent elections took place in November 2020 and they were quite peculiar, not only because of the global sanitary emergency, but because the two strongest candidates have a diametrically opposite stance when it comes to multiple important sectors of society, such as immigration.
The American public elected the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, as the nation’s 46th president, who took office recently, on January 20, 2021. Biden’s ideals on immigration are more welcoming than Trump’s and he states that immigration is extremely positive for the socio-economic and scientific development of the US.
Therefore, during his political campaign, President Biden promised to lift Trump’s restrictions on immigration, introduce an immigration bill, reform the entire immigration system, restructure and improve alternatives available to both vulnerable communities and highly skilled foreign workers, and other immigrant populations.

Biden’s first actions regarding immigration
Delivering on his promises, President Biden used multiple tools like executive actions and memoranda to initially reverse Trump’s restrictive policies on the immigration system.
The Biden Administration:
- Ordered a 100-day moratorium on deportations to restructure the US detention and deportation system.
- Released a statement expressing unconditional support for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients.
- Froze Trump’s restrictions on business immigration, especially the H-1B visa program for highly qualified foreign workers.
These are just a few of the current administration’s first actions on the immigration system. Visit our Blog section to learn more about President Biden’s first actions on immigration.
Advocates’ reaction to Biden’s immigration decisions
Dozens of activist groups, humanitarian organizations and immigrant rights advocates rejoice at Biden’s victory and the end of Trump’s hardline immigration policies.
They state that early actions of the Biden administration demonstrate his stance on immigration and his intention to improve the current situation at the borders and within the US.
For instance, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) states that the fact that President Biden wants to create a path to citizenship for eligible undocumented immigrants “(is) a sigh of relief (…) These are the folks that are the essential workers. They are on the front lines since the pandemic started a year ago. They’ve been at work.”
