Amazon Supports Immigration Bill Benefiting ‘Dreamers’
Young immigrants in the US
There is an immigrant community in the US known as Dreamers. This term refers to young immigrants who came to the country without legal documentation when they were minors.
Many of them are currently recipients of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), an immigration benefit implemented by the Obama administration in 2012. However, DACA offers protection from deportation for two years (with the possibility of extension ) and Dreamers eligible for this program can also apply for a legal work permit, but it is not a permanent solution.
It is important to mention that thousands of Dreamers came to the US as infants or toddlers and remember almost nothing about their countries of origin. Thus, deporting them would be to send them to an environment completely unknown to them.
Immigration bill that would benefit Dreamers
The Biden administration supports immigration and deportation relief programs like DACA, and plans to offer Dreamers a path to permanent legal residence and eventually citizenship. Adding to that, several members of the US House of Representatives have also introduced multiple immigration bills to benefit young immigrants.
For instance, three Democratic members recently introduced the “American Dream and Promise Act,” which would initially offer 10-year conditional permanent residence to eligible Dreamers and allow them to expedite the process to apply for lawful permanent residence if they are already DACA recipients.
Adding to that, this Act would protect not only Dreamers, but also beneficiaries of other deportation relief programs such as TPS (Temporary Protected Status) or DED (Deferred Enforced Departure), allowing them to apply for legal permanent residence.
It is not the first time that this Act has been introduced for Congress approval. In fact, this proposal was also evaluated in 2019, but since the Senate was mostly led by Republican members, it never had a comprehensive review and was not implemented.

Amazon supports the “American Dream and Promise Act”
On Wednesday, March 17, 2021, Amazon CEO Jess Bezos stated through Instagram that Congress should pass the “American Dream and Promise Act” to benefit thousands of young immigrants who are a essential to the local economic system. It is important to clarify that Bezos was the world’s wealthiest person in 2015 and his company is internationally recognized.
Bezos shared his father’s experience, an immigrant who traveled from Cuba to the US on his own at age 16 and, thanks to the American population and immigration policies, was able to stay in the country, start a family and build a promising future.
Amazon CEO openly stated, “I’m hopeful that policymakers will come together to create a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and prioritize more commonsense immigration reforms like reducing the green card backlog (…) Families across America deserve this.”
