American Companies Urge Congress to Offer Citizenship to Dreamers
The controversy surrounding the DREAM Act
On February 4, 2021, two bipartisan senators reintroduced the DREAM Act (Development, Relief and Education for Immigrant Minors Act) for Congress approval. Broadly speaking, the DREAM Act would offer a path to legal residency and eventually American citizenship to undocumented immigrants who came to the US as minors, known as “Dreamers.”
This Act has been rejected by Congress on multiple occasions since 2001, when it was first introduced. However, senators involved in the project stated that it is possible that Congress will pass it this time because of the economic crisis the US is going through and because the current administration, led by President Joe Biden, supports immigration and promotes comprehensive reform.
Congress is currently analyzing the Biden administration’s immigration proposals, including the DREAM Act. However, the controversy within Congress is gigantic as the Biden administration proposes to reform and restructure the entire immigration system, which may create quite a big debate.
Since both opposition groups and those that support Biden’s immigration proposals have a fairly strict stance and also present strong arguments, Congress is receiving petitions and letters from different groups and organizations, which are trying to persuade members of Congress with their opinions regarding the local immigration system and how to handle immigration in times of crisis.

Recognized companies ask Congress to approve the DREAM Act
American biggest companies, along with trade associations, sent a letter to Congress on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, asking it to pass the DREAM Act and allow Dreamers to access immigration benefits and boost the economy in times of crisis. More than 100 American companies signed the letter, supporting the idea of
Internationally recognized companies such as Facebook, Visa and Uber are also part of the coalition of companies that support the DREAM Act. In fact, in the letter sent to Congress, the companies state that “Continued delay or inaction will cause significant negative economic and social impact on businesses and hundreds of thousands of deserving young people across the country.”
Congress is currently debating whether or not to pass Biden’s immigration bill. What the Biden administration did to prevent Congress from rejecting the entire proposal was to introduce the immigration bill in pieces and give Congress the opportunity to review section by section and pass at least a portion. In this way, the Biden administration can foster some kind of progress on the immigration sector, one of the most controversial among the American population and, therefore, one of the most difficult to address and restructure.
