Americans Married to Immigrants Do Not Receive Stimulus Check
The stimulus check plan
Trump’s government had to take an emergency decision to mitigate the economic crisis caused by the arrival of the Coronavirus.
Trump decided to use “stimulus checks” to fuel the continued flow of the economy in the US.
These checks are basically a tax refund that citizens pay annually.
To be able to receive the stimulus check there are several requirements that must be met:
- The applicant must be a native citizen or must have a legal residence permit.
- There is a limit of stimulus checks per family and per person.
- The amount received will depend on the annual income reported on the tax return during 2019.
- If the applicant lost his/her job due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.
- Disabled or retired people are also entitled to receive the stimulus check.
This means that any native citizen should have the right to get the stimulus check if they need it.
However, Trump’s government has prohibited the delivery of these checks to native citizens who are married to immigrants who do not have a valid social security number.
This affects millions of families with children who cannot receive the stimulus check for this arbitrarily implemented policy.
The growing problem for this decision
Since the current government decided to deliver the stimulus checks to every states of the country, it has made clear the expectation that public aid cannot be given to undocumented immigrants, even if they pay annual taxes.
It is clear that millions of undocumented immigrants pay their annual taxes hoping to be able to apply for legal residency by presenting evidence of these payments.
However, Trump’s government decided that even if they pay taxes, if they do not have legal documentation to reside in the US, they cannot receive public monetary aid, such as the stimulus check.
Several States decided to use their stimulus checks to help the most vulnerable undocumented immigrant population, arguing that they help to the progress of local economy and are normally the country’s workforce.
The current government declared that each State can decide how to use their stimulus checks, but recommends that only legal citizens obtain them.
Lawsuits against Trump’s government
Trump’s administration is currently facing a lawsuit for banning the issuance of stimulus checks for Americans married to immigrants without a social security number (SSN).
The stimulus checks provide a total of $ 1,200 that works as a temporary relief. In that way, families can face the current economic situation.
Immigrant rights advocates say the president’s pressure to reduce immigration at all costs is only going to have negative repercussions, and they argue that this is not the right time to focus on anything other than the COVID-19 health crisis.
We must work as a team to overcome the coming global economic crisis.
