Americans Support Immigration Even Amid Controversy

Survey: Americans' true stance on immigration

National debate makes immigration seem negative

Since Biden’s arrival to the White House in January 2021, the debate around the immigration sector has not stopped. This is because the current administration has the firm intention of removing restrictions, rules and limitations implemented by former President Trump on the immigration system, but at the same time, the country is facing the most alarming surge of illegal border crossings in decades.

Currently, the American public’s attention is heavily focused on immigration and the Biden administration’s approach to this controversial sector. Therefore, it is quite natural that different opinions regarding immigration come to light and that the media also constantly informs the local population about the most relevant news regarding immigration and the opinions of both immigrant rights advocates and opposition groups.

However, among that amount of conjecture, assertions and opinions, it is often unclear what the American population’s real stance is on immigration in general, not just on the current border situation, the political asylum process, young immigrants known as Dreamres, Trump’s immigration policies, etc.

Survey: Americans’ true stance on immigration

A survey conducted by Gallup between June 1 and July 5, 2021, which included 1,381 voters (American adult) reveals the American population’s stance on immigration in general amid the national controversy related to the current border situation and irregular immigration.

Before analyzing the results, it is important to mention that Gallup has been conducting immigration-related polls since 1965.

Let’s look at some of the most important findings:

Should immigration levels increase?

Regarding whether immigration levels should increase, the American public’s opinion is still fairly tight:

  • 33% of respondents support expanding immigration, meaning that immigration levels should increase in the US.
  • 35% of respondents think immigration levels should remain as they are now.
  • 31% of respondents think immigration levels should decrease.

Is immigration a good thing for the US?

Despite the national debate surrounding the immigration sector and divided opinions regarding immigration levels, the American public still thinks immigration is a good thing for the country:

  • 75% of respondents think immigration is “a good thing” for the country. This figure represents three in four American citizens.
  • 21% of respondents think immigration is a negative thing for the country.
