America’s Forgotten – Documentary on Illegal Immigration
New documentary exposes the reality of illegal immigration in the US
On Monday, October 19, 2020, the documentary America’s Forgotten was released, exposing the stark reality of the US’ “broken immigration system” . The documentary shows the circumstances immigrants have to go through when they decide to cross borders without legal documentation.
The director, Namrata Singh Gujral, decided to take a journey through the local immigration system in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the repercussions of illegal immigration. During this journey, she realized the imminent threat that undocumented foreigners face.
In fact, she states: “when I started making this, the things I found were eye-opening. I realized the narrative I had been sold and supported was not the real truth. Illegal immigration is a terrible practice that should not only be discouraged, but it should be stopped.”
The documentary proposes multiple alternatives to rebuild the local immigration system, reduce illegal immigration and prevent thousands of immigrants, including minors, from risking their lives to fulfill the well-known “American Dream”.

This is not the first audiovisual production about immigration
Immigration has always been quite a controversial topic among the American population. This controversy has increased since President Trump took office in 2017, mainly because in the opinion of hundreds of activists, his immigration stance and policies are strict and arbitrary.
In fact, the growth of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has been exponential in recent years, increasing immigration detention operations across the US and the number of federal agents in charge of protecting borders from illegal immigration.
Therefore, due to the magnitude of the social controversy, the immigration sector has drawn the attention of critics, activists, immigration attorneys, immigrant rights advocates and even film producers, who assure that the American population is not aware of actual circumstances of immigration in the US.
For instance, in late July 2020, a documentary called Immigration Nation premiered on Netflix, exposing the current conditions of ICE immigration detention centers and how the federal agency conducts extensive investigations to locate undocumented foreigners to deport them in the shortest possible time.
How can we use the information from these documentaries?
These audiovisual productions were released before the US presidential elections, which will take place in November 2020. Therefore, it is important to know in depth what is really happening in the immigration sector in order to choose a stance, taking into account the crisis the country is currently going through.
Adding to that, the country still has a long way to go to overcome the economic downturn that the global Coronavirus pandemic brought and it is essential to understand the impact of immigration to protect the future for generations to come.
