AMLO Plans to Propose to Biden to Extend Aid to Central America
Mexico’s intervention is essential to control the current border situation
Since the end of 2020 and thanks to multiple factors, the US border forces have reported an increase in apprehensions of undocumented immigrants at the borders, who, in their vast majority, plan to apply to different humanitarian programs in this North American country. The situation has become increasingly alarming because the number of illegal crossings increased exponentially after President Biden took office in late January and because a large number of immigrants apprehended at the borders are unaccompanied minors.
Therefore, to control the current border situation and protect its migration plans, the Biden administration is trying to create alliances with neighboring countries to curb massive irregular migration from Central America, which is not entirely related to local migration policies. In fact, the Biden administration is fully aware that, regardless of whether border policies are strict or lax, there are certain conditions and situations inherent in Central American countries that force thousands of people to migrate to North America such as violence, war, social insecurity, famine, inter alia.
Mexico is one of the most influential countries to reduce the number of illegal border crossings since most Central American migrants arrive in the US through this country and immigration law enforcement at Mexico’s southern borders has been a main tool during the last few weeks.
In fact, the Mexican government increased surveillance at the country’s southern borders since mid-March and managed to intercept several caravans heading toward the US, detaining approximately 1,200 undocumented migrants.

AMLO wants to propose to Biden to extend aid program to Central America
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) recently stated that, as part of the strategy to curb irregular migration to North America, he plans to propose to President Biden to support a Mexican international cooperation plan that would offer aid to the Central American territory.
This program is called Sembrando Vida and is designed to improve work environment, offer support and expand opportunities in the agricultural sector. AMLO plans to propose to Biden to extend this program to Central American countries to expand employment alternatives for local citizens, reduce the unemployment rate, curb massive irregular migration and, at the same time, help the environment in times of global crisis and climate change.
It is important to note that thousands of migrants have to leave their countries of origin due to economic instability and lack of employment opportunities. Therefore, according to the Mexican president, this project would boost the economy and substantially expand the agricultural work network, which would help unemployed people, families affected by natural disasters, and farms that have lost their workforce due to weather conditions.
