Applications for Student or Exchange Visas Resume
The immigration sector is gradually reviving
It is well known that the Coronavirus outbreak was massive in the US. In fact, after more than three months, the country is still the main epicenter of the pandemic and the number of infected people is the highest in the world.
Therefore, the current government, led by President Donald Trump, had to implement multiple emergency measures to mitigate the impact of the health crisis.
One of the sectors most affected by the emergency measures is the immigration sector. With this, we refer to the fact that the Trump administration banned the entry of immigrants for more than two months and announced restrictions on employment visas for qualified foreign workers.
In addition to that, the offices of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which is the entity that processes immigration applications, did not have face-to-face appointments available to the public for a considerable period of time.
Therefore, the immigration sector was almost completely paused during the health crisis. This caused a gigantic controversy among immigrant rights advocates mainly because the Trump administration, apart from the global pandemic, has always intended to reduce immigration and increase restrictions and regulations for established processes.
However, despite criticism approving or disapproving of the Trump administration’s policies, we are witnessing how the immigration processes are finally returning to normal.

Foreign students have now the possibility to apply for visas
The consulates and embassies of the US around the world are resuming their services limited and gradually. It means that they are following the protocols of local governments, ensuring the safety of both employees and applicants.
Applications for student or exchange visas were not available for more than two months. However, multiple embassies around the world have announced that they will receive applications from students who want to come to the US to complete their higher education.
For instance, Indian-based embassies and consulates announced that as of August 17, 2020, they will begin issuing student or exchange visas submitted before August 12, 2020.
On the other hand, South America also announced the reopening of some embassies. For example, the Colombian embassy, based in Bogota, resumed operations for student or exchange visas on August 14.
Multiple universities and schools around the country have celebrated this news because international students represent a great benefit to the education sector for several reasons.
Let’s see some of them:
- International students constantly invest in the US education sector.
Therefore, they contribute greatly to the economy and help the universities have enough funds to improve infrastructure. - They bring innovation, dedication, entrepreneurship, knowledge, inter alia.
- They normally become skilled workers and contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.
