Asylum Case Processing in Recent Years
Official figures show the asylum landscape
Official figures from federal entities such as USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) show what has happened to political asylum processing over the past few years.
According to the figures:
- Only 0.4% of asylum applications were approved under the MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols) policy.
- Deportation rates surpassed any historical record under the Title 42 border rule.

Asylum program during the Trump administration
Between 2016 and 2021, the Trump administration implemented several policies that sought to reduce overall immigration levels, affecting humanitarian programs such as political asylum.
One of these policies is the MPP, which states that asylum seekers can only enter the US if they have received a positive response to their cases, that is, after their immigration court dates.
So, what happens to asylum seekers during that period? Well, they must remain in Mexican territory, usually in temporary camps. In fact, this rule is also known as ‘Remain en Mexico”.

Asylum program during the pandemic
The Trump administration, using the pandemic as a means, also implemented Title 42, a border measure that allows for the immediate removal, or expedited deportation, of the vast majority of immigrants arriving at US borders.
This measure has been used to apparently reduce the chances of a massive outbreak of Coronavirus inside the US, a conjecture that has no verifiable support.
