Asylum Hearings for Immigrants in Mexico Will Resume
The Trump administration plans to resume hearings for political asylum
Due to the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the North American territory, the applications for political asylum have been suspended for more than two months.
The Trump administration ensures that this emergency measure helps to:
- Prevent immigration detention centers around the country from becoming even more overcrowded.
- Protect the health of border forces employees.
- Prevent the immigration system from possible saturation in the midst of a global health crisis.
- Prevent another massive wave of Coronavirus in the US.
As a result, asylum seekers have had to wait for more than two months to have a hearing with a local judge.
The current administration of the US announced that hearings for asylum seekers currently residing in Mexico will resume soon.

Why do asylum seekers wait in Mexico?
In 2019, the governments of Mexico and the US agreed to implement the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), which basically states that asylum seekers arriving to the US through Mexico must remain in this country until they receive a response to their immigration applications or until they have a hearing with a judge.
This policy is also known as “Remain in Mexico”. Currently, the situation of asylum seekers under this policy is very risky since they live in temporary shelters that are built roughly around the borders.
In addition to that, due to the fact that there was no availability for asylum requests during the health crisis, these shelters have become considerably overcrowded and the risk of a massive outbreak of Coronavirus increases.
The rump administration announces resumption of hearings
The Trump administration, through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), stated that hearings for asylum seekers, residing in Mexico under the MPP, will resume soon.
The DHS ensures that in order to resume political asylum hearings, certain mandatory requirements must be met:
- Follow all federal safety protocols in times of health crisis.
- Implement emergency measures to prevent a massive outbreak of Coronavirus among immigrant communities, immigration attorneys, and local judges.
Thus, over the next 15 days, the DHS, along with the Department of Justice (DOJ), will announce mandatory protocols to resume hearings for asylum seekers awaiting in Mexico.
