Asylum Seekers Celebrate Election Results
Trump’s policies regarding political asylum
Due to the Trump administration’s stance on immigration, restrictions and requirements to apply for political asylum have increased considerably in recent years.
In President Trump’s opinion, the massive influx of immigrants can harm the US’ economic and health system, mainly because they tend to overuse social benefits offered by the government.
One of the immigration policies adopted by the current administration of the US is the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), which states that asylum seekers must remain in Mexico while receiving a response to their applications. In fact, this policy is commonly known as “Remain in Mexico.”
According to the Trump administration, most asylum applications are rejected by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) as immigrants do not meet mandatory requirements to receive protection through this humanitarian program.
However, in the opinion of the president and his cabinet, immigrants take advantage of the opportunity to reside in the US, work and profit from the local economy while the USCIS reviews their asylum applications, which can take a considerable period of time.
That is why his government created this agreement with Mexico to prevent asylum seekers from entering the US without response to their applications.
Current conditions of asylum seekers and the US presidential elections
Immigrants decide to request protection through political asylum when they try to flee from danger, persecution, violence and other precarious situations of their countries, which put their integrity and lives at risk.
Therefore, they do not always have personal possessions or economic stability and arrive at the borders of the US without basic resources. They currently live in temporary shelters or foundations on the borders of Mexico or neighboring cities in precarious situations, at the mercy of local gangs and survive thanks to the support of humanitarian organizations, activists, immigrant rights advocates and other communities.
They were patiently waiting the results of the US presidential elections, mainly because their future depended on it.

Immigrants at the borders celebrate the triumph of Joe Biden
Hundreds of immigrants under the MPP policy celebrated results of the presidential elections and the triumph of former Vice President Joe Biden, who belongs to the Democratic political party.
They hope that he will keep his promise to remove this immigration policy that forces them to stay in dangerous cities in Mexico, risking their lives while trying to flee adverse circumstances from their own countries.
One of the asylum seekers currently living in a temporary shelter in Matamoros, a Mexico City, states: “This is not only a Biden victory. We migrants also won, and we are very happy, (…) Seeing Trump once again sit on his throne would have been fatal for us.”
Adding to that, representatives of several organizations, which helped and supported asylum seekers during Donald Trump’s term, state: “We celebrate the triumph of Biden and the departure of Donald Trump (…) We are hoping this new presidency truly respects human rights.”
