The migrant story
A recent report exposes the testimony of the first 2 asylum seekers who were detained by federal agents at the US southern border and subsequently taken to Tijuana under the MPP policy.
According to the migrants involved, they were subjected to psychological abuse during the process and no one explained to them the rights to which they were entitled.

What is the MPP?
The MPP is a regulation that states that individuals seeking political asylum in the US must remain in Mexico while their application is processed and a hearing date is assigned.
This policy, also called “Remain in Mexico”, was first implemented during Trump’s term in 2019.

Biden adds humanitarian measures to MPP protocols
According to the Biden administration, these are some of the humanitarian measures proposed with the reactivation of the MPP:
- Facilitating direct transportation to shelters in Mexico.
- Agreements with the Mexican government to increase security at shelters.
- Respect due process during removal to Mexico.
- Expediting the processing of political asylum applications.
Despite President Biden’s assurances that these measures would be implemented to provide more security for asylum seekers, the experience of the first migrants detained appears to be different.

The lack of guarantees in the reimplementation of the MPP
The experience of migrants apprehended at the border mirrors the plight of many people fleeing their home countries due to extreme conditions of violence and who see the US as an opportunity to build a better future.
However, since the reimplementation of the MPP in December 2021, following the order of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, 237 migrants have already arrived at the border without legal documentation and are being taken to Mexico, where they face possible risky situations.
Irregular migration never brings positive repercussions and could be an extremely dangerous journey.
