Asylum Seekers Enter the US through Laredo
Biden rescinds the MPP policy
One of the most important aspects of former President Donald Trump’s political identity is strongly related to the immigration sector, but in a rather strict way. During Trump’s term (2017-2021), we were able to witness how his administration used countless tools, resources, and executive power to restrict immigration in the US, both legal and illegal, which includes humanitarian programs, non-immigrant visa programs, permanent legal residence and citizenship processes, inter alia.
In an attempt to reduce the number of asylum seekers entering the US, former President Trump implemented in 2019 the MPP (Migrant Protection Protocol) or “Remain in Mexico”. This policy banned asylum seekers from entering the country before receiving a response to their immigration applications, which could take several months or more than a year. Therefore, thousands of migrants had to wait in Mexican territory until they could attend their immigration hearings related to the political asylum process.
The current president of the US, Joe Biden, does not agree with such restrictive policies and states that asylum seekers are people in urgent need of international assistance. Therefore, in his opinion, leaving them in limbo in Mexico’s dangerous cities or territories increases the risk for them, who are already trying to flee from precarious situations.
Thus, one of the Biden administration’s first actions was to suspend new enrollment in the MPP program and to unveil a resettlement project that would allow certain eligible asylum seekers to gradually enter the US (about 25,000 asylum seekers).

Laredo receives dozens of immigrants under Biden’s resettlement plan
To be eligible under Biden’s resettlement plan, asylum seekers must have active cases and reside in Mexico under Trump’s MPP policy. This is mainly due to the fact that border restrictions on grounds of health emergency are still active and this project does not currently include new asylum applications or those previously rejected.
The asylee resettlement plan came into effect on February 19, 2021, and hundreds of asylum seekers have already entered the US thanks to this project. Recently, the Biden administration included more authorized ports of entry to process pending political asylum cases, and the cities of Laredo and McAllen began receiving asylum seekers on March 22, expanding facilities available to these vulnerable communities.
In fact, since then, dozens of asylum seekers have entered the US through Laredo and it is estimated that approximately 550 immigrants will legally cross the borders over the next several weeks through Laredo as well, thanks to Biden’s resettlement plan.
The fact that President Biden rescinded the MPP policy definitely changes the federal government’s approach to the immigration sector and opens a door of hope for immigrant populations, especially those most vulnerable.
