Asylum Seekers Under the MPP Await Elections
What is the MPP policy?
Immigrants have the possibility to request political asylum in the US when they are victims of persecution, threat, violence or war in their countries. However, the political asylum process has been substantially modified under the administration of President Donald Trump.
The Trump government disagrees with the idea of asylum seekers residing within the US while receiving a response to their immigration applications. That is why, in January 2019, the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) was implemented. This immigration policy is also known as “Remain in Mexico”.
Broadly speaking, this agreement between the governments of the US and Mexico states that asylum seekers must wait in Mexico until they have a hearing with a judge and receive a response to their immigration cases.
It is essential to understand that immigrants request international protection through humanitarian programs such as political asylum when they do not have economic solvency or resources to be able to enter the US through other migratory processes.

Current circumstances in Mexico’s borders
Currently, asylum seekers live in Mexico in temporary shelters or foundations where:
- There is no access to toilets in adequate hygiene conditions.
- They survive thanks to donations from neighboring communities, humanitarian organizations or immigrant rights advocates.
- There are no medical personnel to assist in the event of a health emergency.
- On many occasions, there is no access to basic services to have a relatively stable quality of life.
- They are at the mercy of local gangs that constantly threaten their well-being and integrity.
Therefore, they constantly ask for help from the US government to be able to get out of these camps, which they have called “hell”. Dozens of asylum seekers under the MPP policy state that they are trying to flee the danger of their countries, but that ideals of the Trump administration put their lives at risk.

Asylum seekers are patiently waiting for the presidential elections
Dozens of immigrants currently living in a camp, in Matamoros (Mexico), where they do not have enough resources and depend on donations from aid groups, are anxiously awaiting the US presidential elections, which will take place in November 2020.
The elections will define their future and circumstances in which they will live while waiting responses to their asylum applications:
- On the one hand, if President Trump wins reelection (Republican political party), the MPP policy will remain in force unless the Supreme Court of Justice decides otherwise. Adding to that, requirements and restrictions to apply for political asylum could increase if the Trump administration continues to lead the nation.
- On the other hand, if former Vice President Joe Biden wins the elections (Democratic political party), the MPP policy will be removed, as he has stated on multiple occasions, and asylum seekers would have the possibility to reside in the US while their immigration cases are resolved.
Hence, asylum seekers state: “Here we are all asking God for Biden to win.” They hope that if Biden wins the elections, they will be able to flee from danger without facing risky situations at Mexico’s borders.
