Backlog of Immigration Cases Affects Biden’s Plans
First months in office – Biden tries to expand legal immigration paths
The current administration of the US, with Democratic President Joe Biden leading, has a rather ambitious vision when it comes to the immigration sector as, among many other things, it plans to widen and expand the pathways to legal immigration in order to decrease irregular immigration, which would clearly include legal alternatives for foreigners currently residing in the US undocumented.
During his first four months in office (since January 20, 2021), President Biden and his team have removed a host of restrictive policies implemented by the previous administration, led by former Republican President Donald Trump, and have adopted new avenues of action to streamline immigration case processing and expand the options available to the most vulnerable immigrant populations, such as asylum seekers and refugees.
In fact, during his first 100 days leading the White House, President Biden tripled the number of immigration-related executive actions compared to former President Trump during the same period. Adding to that, his administration plans to continue promoting comprehensive immigration reform to reshape the entire immigration system and establish lasting policies.
However, even though the Biden administration has removed limitations and rules on the immigration sector, there is still a long way to go due to certain restrictions related to the global Coronavirus pandemic and a fairly large backlog of immigration cases.

Pandemic-related restrictions affect Biden’s immigration plans
Apart from the fact that the Trump administration always wanted to reduce immigration levels in the US at all costs, the sudden arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic allowed it to expand restrictions on all kinds of immigration processes and adopt unconventional measures, which considerably restricted immigration in the US.
Currently, the local immigration system is gradually returning to its regular processes thanks to the national vaccination project, which reduces the health risk, and the intervention of the Biden administration. However, that is not the case in many countries.
Therefore, most of the US’ embassies and consulates are offering services with limited staff across the world, which affects the processing of immigration cases and increases the backlog of pending applications both inside and outside the country.
In fact, according to a recent report by The Hill, in April, there were more than 500,000 immigrants with pre-approved applications to attend their interview. However, there were only 22,000 interviews scheduled. This represents a 63.3% reduction compared to pre-pandemic levels, when embassies and consulates around the world scheduled approximately 60,000 immigrant visa interviews on a monthly basis.
It means that, in addition to removing restrictive policies, the Biden administration must also focus on expediting immigration case processing and adopting more efficient and effective methods to allow qualified foreigners to enter the US.
