Biden Gives Another Chance to Denied Asylum Applications
Asylum seekers are a priority for the current administration
The Biden administration has always emphasized the need to repair the damage caused by the Trump administration to the most vulnerable immigrant communities. In the opinion of the current president of the US, former President Trump implemented restrictive policies on the immigration system that tremendously affected people in urgent need of international protection, such as asylum seekers.
Therefore, during his first months in office, President Biden and his team have focused heavily on removing the Trump administration’s rules and limitations on the immigration sector to ultimately pave the way and promote the first comprehensive immigration reform in decades.
One of the Biden administration’s priorities when it comes to the immigration sector is asylum seekers, people who flee persecution because of their race, religion, political opinion, inter alia. Asylum seekers usually arrive at the US borders or enter the country to request international assistance to protect their lives. However, under the Trump administration, asylum seekers truly went through difficult processes and situations due to certain rules that narrowed the alternatives available to them.

Asylum seekers whose applications were denied have another chance
As part of Biden’s plan to protect the most vulnerable immigrant communities, his administration announced on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 that asylum seekers whose applications had been denied or dismissed for failing to appear in immigration court on the day of their hearings will have another opportunity to apply to this humanitarian program in the US.
How will Biden’s plan work for eligible asylum seekers?
Under Biden’s plan, only asylum seekers who were sent to Mexico under the MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols) policy and whose applications were denied or dismissed for not attending their hearings will be eligible.
Under these parameters, the number of asylum seekers eligible for this benefit is uncertain, but it is estimated that it will not be high. This plan certainly opens a door of hope for asylum seekers who had to go through precarious situations during Trump’s term, especially under the MPP policy.
What is the MPP policy?
The MPP policy, also known as “Remain in Mexico”, is an immigration rule officially implemented by the Trump administration in 2019, which forced thousands of asylum seekers, including entire families, to remain in Mexican territory until attending their hearings in an immigration court, which can take several months or even more than a year.
The Biden administration has already permanently ended the MPP program and is currently trying to offer better alternatives for asylum seekers, especially those affected by this policy.
