Biden Increases Effort to Reunite Immigrant Families
Thousands of families separated under the previous administration
Irregular immigration was always a major problem for the Trump administration and that is the reason why it tried to stem the flow of undocumented immigrants by any means possible.
For instance, in early April 2018, the Trump administration officially implemented the so-called “Zero Tolerance Policy”, which states that foreigners who enter the country without legal documentation must face criminal prosecution for violating local immigration law.
It is no secret that a high number of adult immigrants trying to cross the US’ borders without prior authorization come with minors, who clearly cannot face criminal prosecution.
Thus, Trump’s “Zero Tolerance Policy” led to the separation of thousands of minors from their parents, despite having been officially active for less than six months. However, it is worth mentioning that the Trump administration conducted a secret pilot version of this policy between 2017 and 2018.

Biden’s intention to reunify immigrant families
When President Joe Biden arrived at the White House in January 2021, one of his first actions as leader of the US was to issue an executive order, directing the creation of a task force to reunite families separated in the border territory under Trump’s “Zero Tolerance Policy”.
Let’s look at some important facts:
- The task force includes entities such as DHS (Department of Homeland Security) and HHS (Department of Health and Human Services).
- By March 2021, this task force had already found the parents of 105 minors separated at the borders, the vast majority of whom had been deported under the Trump administration.
- In May, the Biden administration announced that immigrant families separated at the borders could be reunited in the US and access different social services and benefits.
- From February to now, this task force has been able to reunite more than 50 immigrant families.

The current administration increases efforts to reunite immigrant families
On Monday, September 13, the Family Reunification Task Force announced that it will expand efforts to find immigrant families separated under the Trump administration, which includes collaboration by the International Organization for Migration.
The primary goal of this renewed effort is to find the parents of minors separated at the borders, who are currently in remote areas of Central America, and bring them to the US.
