Biden Meets with Dreamers after DACA Ruling
Thousands of Dreamers in limbo after the DACA ruling
Among the many immigrant communities that are part of the American social fabric are the so-called Dreamers. This term refers to young immigrants who came, or rather were brought, to the US without legal documentation when they were minors. We are talking about people who have lived in North America for as long as they can remember, have built a life here and know almost nothing about their countries of origin.
Regardless of the fact that they arrived in the country as children, they are still part of the undocumented foreigner community, who, for violating local immigration law, do not have access to legal immigration benefits, except in some specific cases and under certain extraordinary conditions.
Therefore, Dreamers currently have only one option to reside legally in the US temporarily, thanks to DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). This deportation relief program was implemented by the Obama administration in 2012 and has gone through multiple legal battles over the past few years, especially during former President Donald Trump’s term, between 2017 and early 2021.
However, even though there is a new administration leading the nation, a Texas judge recently ruled against DACA and declared that it does not meet the mandatory requirements to be a legitimate immigration benefit. As a result, there are currently hundreds of thousands of Dreamers in limbo who meet the eligibility requirements to be DACA recipients, but who have been affected by the judge’s verdict.

Dreamers meet with President Biden after DACA ruling
The Biden administration has always been in favor of Dreamers and the DACA program. In fact, it is important to remember that President Biden served as Vice President during Barack Obama’s term and was therefore present at the time of implementing this immigration benefit.
Despite the judge’s ruling, the Biden administration has commented repeatedly about the need to protect Dreamers from deportation and offer them a path to citizenship, especially since the vast majority are essential workers in all sorts of sectors and have been part of American society for many years, if not decades.
In fact, after the judge’s ruling, a group of Dreamers met with President Biden and discussed the verdict and what DACA represents for them, even more so now in times of global crisis.
A DACA recipient who was part of this meeting stated, “We got to go introduce ourselves to him, tell our stories, what DACA means to us, and why we need to pass citizenship for all (…) Being able to advocate for something that means a lot and could change the lives of so many to the President, who was the power to do something about it is really powerful.”
