Biden Plans to Prevent Deportation of Hondurans and Guatemalans
The Biden government plans to increase benefits and alternatives for immigrant communities
The US presidential elections took place on November 3, 2020, and the local population elected the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, as the nation’s 46th president, who will take office on January 20, 2021. Thus, the country is going through a transition period.
It is no secret that the president-elect has a diametrically opposite opinion to the current president, Donald Trump, when it comes to immigration. Biden, along with his cabinet, plans to lift Trump’s immigration restrictions, halt the construction of the border wall that separates the US from Mexico, and remove policies that hinder legal immigration processes.
Adding to that, the president-elect plans to increase benefits for the most vulnerable immigrant communities such as refugees and asylum seekers, as well as stop mass deportations and offer alternatives for millions of undocumented immigrants, who managed to cross borders without prior authorization and now reside within the US.

Biden’s team evaluates the possibility of exempting Hondurans and Guatemalans from deportation
According to a recent Reuters report, Biden’s transition team might protect from deportation to more than 1 million Hondurans and Guatemalans through Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
It is important to clarify that TPS is an immigration benefit that offers protection against deportation to immigrants from several countries, which are experiencing ongoing armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, civil wars and other precarious situations. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is the entity in charge of choosing the TPS beneficiary countries.
Immigrants from DHS-selected countries, who already reside in the US, can apply to this program to protect their future and avoid deportation, regardless of their immigration status.
The reason why the Biden government plans to protect them through the TPS program is because the Central American territory was hit by several hurricanes during November 2020, leaving thousands of families affected and without access to basic services. Therefore, the president-elect assures that deporting Hondurans and Guatemalans in the midst of natural disasters would only worsen the situation in Central America and would put their integrity at risk, both physical and psychological.
Adding to that, the current administration of the US, headed by President Donald Trump, has tried to remove humanitarian benefits like TPS on multiple occasions, and the Biden administration, because it has a more welcoming view on immigration, plans to revoke restrictive policies of the Trump government.
