Biden to Increase Annual Refugee Limit
The US as the destination of thousands of refugees
The US immigration system offers several humanitarian programs for foreigners to request international protection. It is no secret that there are hundreds of countries that are going through adverse and precarious circumstances, which endanger the lives and integrity of their citizens.
Thus, thousands of immigrants yearn to come to the US to protect their lives and flee persecution, danger, threat, violence, and war from their countries.
For instance, immigrants have the possibility to seek refuge when they are outside the US, meet admissibility requirements, and have not permanently relocated in any other country.
Adding to that, in order for the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to approve their applications, they must prove that they have been, or could be, victims of persecution or violence due to their religion, race, sexual orientation, political opinion, nationality, inter alia.

The annual refugee cap and the Trump administration
Annually, the US government is required to announce what the refugee limit will be for the following fiscal year (October-September).
Since one of the main purposes of the Trump administration is to reduce immigration, the refugee limit has dropped substantially in recent years, creating a record in the US.
Let’s see why:
- During fiscal year 2020, the Trump administration only allowed the entry of 18,000 refugees, which represents a decrease of more than 80% compared to the refugee limit during Barack Obama’s term, which was 100,000.
- Using the global Coronavirus pandemic as support, the Trump administration lowered the refugee cap for fiscal year 2021 by 16% compared to last year. That means the current limit is 15,000. This is a record number for the US, which is no longer the most refugee-hosting country in the world.

Joe Biden plans to increase annual refugee limit
President-elect Joe Biden, who belongs to the Democratic political party and served as vice president during Barack Obama’s term, has repeatedly mentioned his intention to increase the annual refugee limit.
Biden states that most of Trump’s immigration policies should be modified or removed, including the refugee limit. The president-elect plans to increase this limit to 125,000.
Adding to that, the Biden administration also plans to reform the immigration system and replace many existing policies with more welcoming ones, involving multicultural inclusion and international economic growth.
