Biden to Present Immigration Reform Bill

The Biden government to unveil its immigration bill this week

Biden’s immigration ideals

The current President of the US, Joe Biden, who took office on January 20, 2021, has a rather broad and welcoming stance when it comes to immigration, unlike his predecessor, Donald Trump.

In fact, the Biden administration has the ideal of introducing an ambitious immigration bill that, if passed by Congress, would promote the first comprehensive immigration reform in decades (1986).

Initially, during his first day in office, President Biden shared some of the most important proposals of “The U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021” such as permanent amnesty for immigrants known as Dreamers, who came to the country without legal documentation when they were minors, a path to citizenship for more than 11 million undocumented immigrants, a new strategy to increase surveillance at the borders and curb irregular immigration through technology instead of building a border wall, inter alia.

However, a week after Biden took office, the White House stated that it would be more effective to break the immigration bill into pieces so that Congress can evaluate each proposal in depth. In this way, the Biden administration prevents Congress from rejecting the entire immigration reform.

It is important to clarify that the Biden administration is acting quite assertively and intelligently when it comes to its immigration bill as many administrations, belonging to different political parties, have previously tried to promote comprehensive immigration reform after the 80s and it has not been possible due to Congress intervention. Therefore, breaking the immigration bill into pieces could be the best strategy to achieve comprehensive reform.

According to a recent NBC News report, the Biden administration plans to officially introduce the immigration reform bill later this week. The current president of the US will initially present issues that his administration considers most essential to improve the local immigration system and offer viable alternatives for the most vulnerable immigrant populations.

Adding to that, since the Biden administration plans to break the immigration bill into pieces, there are some parts of the legislation that will go into effect faster than others through the US House of Representatives and the Senate. By this, we refer to proposals that do not need Congress approval.
