Biden’s Changes to the Immigration System will Take Time
Biden rescinds Trump’s immigration policies
The health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic has been the main focus of governments around the world, and the US is no exception. During the most recent presidential elections, which took place in early November 2020, the two strongest candidates (former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden) focused their political campaigns mainly on the health system, the sanitary crisis, the national vaccination project and strategies to boost the economy in times of crisis.
However, there are other sectors that were also quite relevant during the presidential elections and have always been controversial among the American population. That is the case of immigration.
The Democratic nominee, who took the victory during the election and is the current president of the US, has a rather broad and welcoming stance when it comes to immigration, unlike former President Trump. In President Biden’s opinion, the country needs foreign workforce to overcome the current economic crisis and finds its international competitiveness in multicultural inclusion and integration.
Thus, since he took office on January 20, 2021, President Biden has lifted multiple restrictions and limitations implemented by the Trump administration on the immigration system. To promote the comprehensive immigration reform that the current government proposes, President Biden assures that it is essential to initially remove restrictive policies on immigration processes and gradually restructure alternatives for foreigners to come to the US.
The Biden government will need more time to fulfill its immigration promises
In just a couple of weeks, the Biden administration has already issued several Executive Orders and Memoranda to remove Trump’s rules and policies, which substantially hindered immigration processes, and to create action plans to improve the immigration system and repair damages caused by the previous administration during the last four years.
However, the current administration of the US, before Biden took office, stated that many of the changes to the immigration system will take a considerable period of time due to existing restrictions, the global health emergency and to avoid an immigration crisis within the country.
In fact:
- In late December 2020, several Biden administration officials stated that reforming the local immigration system will take time and will not be as easy or fast as immigrant communities would hope.
- President Biden stated, also in late December, that his administration would need at least 6 months to revoke Trump’s restrictive policies, which means that immigration reform could take even years.
Anguish among activists and immigrant communities
Dozens of immigrant rights activists and advocates, who supported Joe Biden’s political campaign, fear that his administration will not be able to remove Trump’s restrictions on time and thousands of people will continue to face precarious situations or deportation proceedings in the midst of a global health crisis.
Adding to that, several immigrants have shared their testimonies and stated that the Biden administration might not restructure the immigration system before being deported from the US for crossing the borders without legal documentation.
