Biden’s First 100 Days on Immigration
The most recent presidential election in the US
2020 has been a very peculiar year for the world. The sudden arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic and its massive global outbreak definitely changed the course of humanity and the way we relate to our environment.
In the case of the US, this year has brought many changes, not only because it is still the main epicenter of the pandemic, the economic downturn or the current unemployment rate, but because the presidential elections also took place. On November 3, 2020, the American population had to decide who would be the leader of the nation for the next four years.
The two strongest candidates were:
- Current President of the US, Donald Trump, who belongs to the Republican political party and was seeking a second term.
- Former Vice President Joe Biden (Barack Obama’s term), who belongs to the Democratic political party.
After several days of vote counting, the results revealed that the American population elected the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, as the 46th president of the US, who will take office in January 2021.
The controversy surrounding the immigration sector
Immigration was a cornerstone of Donald Trump’s political campaign to win the 2016 election. President Trump constantly refers to immigration with a negative connotation, stating that American citizens lose opportunities due to foreign workforce and that immigrant communities often take advantage of local resources and benefits, becoming an unnecessary burden on the local economic system.
That is why, for the past four years, his administration has used every tool at its disposal to curb illegal immigration and reduce and limit legal immigration.
Due to the nature of Trump’s proposals when it comes to immigration, many of his policies have sparked massive controversy in the US, mainly because the most vulnerable immigrant communities are currently facing precarious situations.
Other than that, important market sectors such as technology, science and research are also facing a skilled workforce shortage due to the Trump administration’s restrictions on business immigration.
Biden vows to turn the tide on immigration in his first 100 days
One of the reasons why the American population chose Joe Biden as the next president is precisely because of current immigration policies.
Therefore, Biden exposes, on his official website, what he plans to do about the local immigration system during his first 100 days in office.
Let’s see some of his proposals:
- Reverse Trump’s policies that encourage and increase the separation of immigrant families at the borders of the US.
- Transform political asylum policies and conditions for asylum seekers.
- Restructure detention of undocumented immigrants and the border forces’ protocols.
- Halt the construction of the border wall that separates Mexico from the US.
- Protect the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This is a benefit that protects immigrants, who arrived in the country without legal documentation when they were minors, from deportation.
- Lift Trump’s Muslim ban.
- Restructure Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
- Increase alternatives for business immigration.
As we can see, his proposals are almost diametrically opposed to Trump’s when it comes to the immigration sector and it is possible that his policies will drastically change the local immigration system as we know it.
