Biden’s First Six Months in Office and Immigration
Immigration – A Pillar for the Current Administration
President Joe Biden arrived at the White House with the firm intention of improving the US immigration system, which, in his opinion, has been outdated and broken for quite some time now. Under this idea, the Biden administration has always had the goal of removing and lifting restrictions implemented by former President Trump on the immigration sector, expanding the programs available to foreign workers and students, and offering international assistance to the most vulnerable immigrant communities.
President Biden states that the US must have an immigration system in line with its values as an immigrant nation and that the country has found strength and international recognition in the presence of foreigners throughout history. Moreover, thanks to multicultural inclusion, this nation has the strongest and largest economy in the world.
Therefore, since Democratic President Biden took office on January 20, 2021, his administration has focused tirelessly and heavily on restructuring the entire immigration system and repairing the damage caused by the Trump administration on all kinds of immigrant populations.

What has Biden done on immigration in his first six months?
President Biden has been in office for six months now, and given that immigration is one of the most important sectors for his administration, it is important to recognize what he has done regarding the immigration system and also the challenges he faces.
Broadly speaking, the Biden administration has made great strides on the immigration system as it has lifted multiple restrictions and limitations implemented by Trump on all kinds of immigration processes. At the same time, Biden is facing the most alarming surge of illegal border crossings in decades, which has undoubtedly become the number one challenge for his administration.
Let’s look at some important facts:
Ambitious immigration bill
During his first days in office, President Biden unveiled a rather ambitious immigration bill, which, if passed by Congress, would substantially transform the federal government’s approach to the immigration sector in general, including immigrants currently residing in the US undocumented.
The MPP Policy
The Biden administration recently rescinded the MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols), or “Remain in Mexico” policy, which forced thousands of asylum seekers to remain in Mexico until they received a response to their immigration cases. This policy was implemented by Trump in 2019.
Zero Tolerance Policy
The Biden administration recently rescinded Trump’s “Zero Tolerance Policy”, which stated that adults who cross the US’ borders without legal documentation should face criminal prosecution for violating local immigration law. This policy led to the separation of thousands of minors from their parents and subsequently to a gigantic social controversy.
Restrictions on H-1B visas
Trump banned the issuance of H-1B visas for highly skilled foreign workers in June 2020 due to the global health crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. The Biden administration did not renew this restriction in March 2021.
Refugee cap
President Biden increased the refugee cap to 62,500 for fiscal year 2021 (October-September). Former President Trump had set the lowest refugee cap in the country’s recent history at 15,000.
