Incoming government advisers comment on the president-elect’s immigration plans

Current President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden (Barack Obama’s term) were the strongest candidates during the most recent US presidential election, which took place on November 3, 2020. Biden, the Democratic nominee, took the victory and will be the nation’s 46th president.

The two candidates had a diametrically opposite view when it comes to multiple important sectors of society, including the immigration sector. The president-elect does not agree with Trump’s restrictive immigration policies and argues that immigration is an advantage for the US as it brings talent, international competitiveness, skilled workforce and entrepreneurs from abroad, which, in his opinion, constantly drives the economy and contributes greatly to the development and growth of local companies.

Over the past few weeks, dozens of immigrant rights advocates and activists have called on the Biden administration to transform the local immigration system, lift the Trump administration’s restrictions, protect the most vulnerable immigrant communities, remove strict policies on the political asylum process and fulfil its immigration promises.

Thus, in response to these requests, Biden’s government advisers have recently commented on the president-elect’s plans when it comes to the immigration system.

Let’s look at some key points:

  • Biden’s administration plans to freeze deportations for 100 days, while implementing a “less invasive” deportation strategy than Trump’s and increasing legal alternatives for undocumented immigrants in the US, mainly those who do not have criminal records nor represent a threat to the local population.
  • The president-elect plans to restructure immigration enforcement within the US, reducing operations conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which, under the Trump administration, have the goal of detaining as many undocumented immigrants as possible and initiating mass deportation proceedings.
  • The incoming government will reform the political asylum process to protect the integrity of asylum seekers, who are currently living in dangerous cities of Mexico under the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), also known as “Remain in Mexico. According to the advisers, the Biden administration will process pending asylum applications at authorized ports of entry as soon as possible, starting with the most urgent cases.

Therefore, the Biden administration advisers state that immigration “is an area of policy-making where there has been grave damage done by the current administration. They have created chaos. They’ve even weaponized the immigration system to separate children from their families (…) Rebuilding these processes is going to be a significant task. It is a priority for the incoming administration — and they will begin on Day One.”

These changes won’t happen overnight

Incoming government officials recently stated that restructuring the immigration system will take a considerable period of time, perhaps exceeding expectations of the American population and immigrant rights advocates.

Adding to that, the president-elect also stated that he will need at least six months to reverse Trump’s restrictive policies on the immigration sector. Biden argued that if his government implements these changes quickly and suddenly, they could unleash an immigration and humanitarian crisis within the US.
