Biden’s New Strategy to Promote the Naturalization Process
The naturalization process
Immigrant communities have always been part of the US’ history and are now essential to the sociocultural fabric. In fact, the local immigration system is quite extensive and offers a wide range of alternatives to all kinds of foreign populations, from highly skilled workers, agricultural workers and young immigrants, to vulnerable communities in need of international protection and relatives of American citizens or LPRs (Lawful Permanent Residents).
One of the processes available to immigrants is the path to citizenship, called the naturalization process, which is the final requirement for eligible foreigners to officially become American citizens. After taking a civic exam and demonstrating their English proficiency, they will be able to attend their Naturalization Ceremony, where the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) certifies that they meet all the eligibility requirements to become local citizens.
When immigrants complete this process, they receive exactly the same benefits and have the same rights as any other citizen, including the right to hold an American passport. Following the path to citizenship is the dream of thousands of immigrants, who usually come to the US to build a promising future for their beloved ones.

The Trump administration tried to hinder the naturalization process
Former President Donald Trump, who led the White House between 2017 and 2021, always had the ideal of reducing immigration levels in the US and, therefore, used all the resources and tools at his disposal to hinder existing processes and increase eligibility requirements for foreigners in general.
Regarding the naturalization process, in November 2020, the Trump administration announced that it would increase the number of questions on the civic test, which evaluates immigrants’ knowledge about the American culture, the country’s history, customs and local society.
However, in late February 2021, a month after President Biden took office, the USCIS reverted to the 2008 version of the civic test, removing Trump’s 2020 version.
Biden will present a plan to simplify the naturalization process
In mid-May, the Biden administration announced that it would implement a more effective, efficient and easy process for eligible immigrants, who are already LPRs, to become American citizens as soon as possible.
According to a USCIS official, the Biden administration plans to unveil today, Friday, July 2, a fairly extensive naturalization plan, which aims to incentivize eligible residents to complete their naturalization process and become local citizens, first reported by CNN.
The report reveals that the USCIS plans to create alliances with other agencies such as the US Postal Service to promote the path to citizenship and be able to reach more public. Apart from that, the Biden administration might also host Naturalization Ceremonies in public places such as national parks to create more visibility among the local population and encourage multicultural integration.
