Biden’s Nominee to Lead USCIS Has Big Plans
The USCIS – A key piece in restructuring the entire immigration system
Within the branches of DHS (Department of Homeland Security), there are several agencies focused on the immigration sector and all aspects related to visa programs available for foreigners, humanitarian programs for vulnerable immigrant populations, deportation processes, border surveillance and immigration law enforcement within the US.
One of the most important entities for the local immigration system is the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services), which is basically in charge of receiving, reviewing and responding to immigration applications in the country. It means that this agency processes not only visa applications, but also cases related to all kinds of immigration processes, from programs based on employment and study for qualified foreigners, to programs based on family ties and political asylum and refugee applications.
Now that President Joe Biden’s administration has the firm intention of transforming the entire immigration system through comprehensive reform, the USCIS is an extremely important piece in meeting this goal, which would almost completely change the approach of the federal government and the US in general to the immigration sector.

Biden’s nominee to lead USCIS might improve current conditions
As part of his strategy to revoke the Trump administration’s restrictive policies and improve the immigration system’s efficiency, President Joe Biden recently nominated Ur Jaddou to lead the USCIS during his term.
Jaddou, who is the daughter of immigrants and has vast experience in the immigration sector, attended her nomination hearing on Wednesday, May 26, where she discussed about her plans with the USCIS if approved as director of this agency.
Biden’s nominee definitely has the same vision as the current administration regarding the immigration sector and the steps to take to restructure and reform a long-broken immigration system.
Among other things, Jaddou plans to:
- Expedite immigration processes to reduce the alarming backlog of pending immigration cases.
- Improve technological tools and modernize processing methods to have a stable immigration system in line with global needs of the 21st century.
- Implement measures to have fiscal solvency.
- Improve the USCIS conditions and resources in general to be able to process immigration applications “fairly, efficiently, and in a humane manner”.
- Improve conditions for the USCIS employees, who have had heavy workloads due to the backlog of immigration cases resulting from Trump’s restrictive policies and the global Coronavirus pandemic.
The Senate Judiciary Committee has not yet released its votes publicly. However, if Biden’s nominee becomes director of the USCIS, she would definitely turn the tide on immigration over the next four years, a big change compared to what happened under the Trump administration (2017-2021).
