Bipartisan Immigration Bill to Address Border Situation
Bipartisan Senators Introduce Bill to Address Surge of Illegal Crossings
The Biden administration is currently facing multiple challenges and a gigantic social controversy due to a surge of illegal border crossings. In fact, in March 2021, the CBP (Customs and Border Protection) reported the highest number of apprehensions at the borders in the last 15 years, which undoubtedly unleashes a wave of criticism and uncertainty regarding Biden’s immigration plans and increases the health risk amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
The situation is especially worrying and alarming for border communities and local governments. Therefore, two bipartisan Senators from Texas and Arizona (border states) introduced an immigration bill on Thursday, April 22, which would address the current border situation with a humanitarian approach, rather than strict ideals that could put the integrity of the most vulnerable immigrant communities at risk.
Within the proposal, the Senators ask to:
- Expedite asylum application processing at the borders, for now only those that are eligible considering that certain border restrictions are still in place due to the global Coronavirus pandemic.
- Increase the country’s capacity (centers, foundations or other facilities) to house the growing number of unaccompanied immigrant minors, family units and asylum seekers apprehended at the borders.
- Federal funding and ongoing assistance to border communities and local governments.
As a goal, this immigration bill seeks to respect human rights of immigrant populations and protect the integrity of unaccompanied minors amid the global health emergency.

The Biden administration must handle the current border situation
Since the number of border encounters increased exponentially, dozens of critics, members of state governments, and even members of Congress have raised their voices regarding the current border situation and how the Biden administration should address mass irregular migration and the repercussions it creates among border communities.
To give a specific example, a group of hundreds of sheriffs recently sent a letter to President Biden, asking him to re-implement border policies of his predecessor Donald Trump, who adopted extremely strict measures to curb mass irregular migration, but that did not prevent a surge of illegal crossings in 2019.
Therefore, now that the Biden administration is facing a similar situation, it is important that, in addition to enforcing immigration law both at the borders and within the US, it carries out strategies and proposes action plans to reduce mass migration from its root causes, which are intrinsically related to vulnerable territories such as Central America, where unemployment, lack of resources and violence force thousands of people to migrate to North America.
