Border Apprehension Numbers Have Slightly Decreased in Recent Weeks
Highest apprehension rates in decades
According to the opinion of dozens of experts and critics, the biggest challenge the administration has faced so far, aside from the situation with Afghanistan, is the surge of illegal border crossings, which has not decreased since February 2021 but, instead, has increased exponentially during the last few months.
In fact, according to official CBP (Customs and Border Protection) figures, border apprehension rates from March through July exceed those of recent decades.
These border encounters include single adults (in many cases re-entries), family units and unaccompanied immigrant minors.
Usually, throughout the US’ history, there are surges of illegal border crossings that last a couple of months and gradually diminish, but this time it has been the opposite.
In other words, the Biden administration faces an unprecedented challenge as border apprehension rates have increased for five consecutive months.

Border encounter numbers have decreased this month
The Biden administration, with the help and cooperation of neighboring nations such as Mexico, has used every tool at its disposal to reduce the number of undocumented immigrants apprehended in the border territory, and, apparently, it has worked at least somewhat.
According to a recent NBC News report, the number of border encounters has decreased slightly during the first two weeks of September, compared to the first half of August.
Let’s take a look at some numbers:
- Over the past few weeks, CBP has reported 6,177 border encounters per day, a 15.09% decrease from August, when border forces reported 7,275 encounters per day.
- Although the border apprehension rate has decreased slightly, the deportation rate has increased, from 2,550 on August 11 to 2,733 on September 10 (last Friday).
It is worth noting that CBP has not yet released August border apprehension rates and estimates are that they will be higher than July.
Nevertheless, the beginning of September could bring a positive change for the Biden administration regarding the current border situation.
