Border City Mayor Comments on New Process for Asylum Seekers
Biden’s plan to resettle asylum seekers within the US
Before the presidential election, Democratic nominee Joe Biden promised to reverse restrictive policies implemented by the Trump administration on the immigration system. Many of these rules, limitations, and restrictions affect humanitarian programs such as political asylum and refuge, which are available to immigrant communities in need of international assistance.
One of Trump’s policies that drastically modified the political asylum process is the program called “Remain in Mexico,” officially known as MPP (Migrant Protection Protocol). The MPP forced thousands of asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while they awaited a response to their immigration applications. Many of them, due to the global Coronavirus pandemic and other restrictions, have had to wait in Mexican territory for more than a year, often without access to basic services.
President Biden promised to remove the MPP program, stating that it contradicts the US’ values as an immigrant nation. Initially, the Biden government suspended new enrollments in this program and introduced a resettlement plan that went into effect on Friday, February 19, which would allow certain authorized ports of entry to process up to 300 asylum cases on a daily basis. Biden’s resettlement project could benefit more than 25,000 asylum seekers, who still have active cases.
Biden’s asylee resettlement project is a door of hope for the most vulnerable immigrant communities, those seeking international protection as they try to flee adverse situations such as violence, war, famine, persecution and abuse.

Brownsville Mayor comments on Biden’s asylee resettlement plan
Since Biden’s plan to allow asylum seekers to enter the US has already gone into effect, border cities expect the number of immigrants arriving in their territories to increase significantly over the next few weeks.
In fact, the Mayor of Brownsville, a Texas city, commented on Biden’s resettlement plan and the MPP policy. Mayor Mendez states that the MPP program did indeed reduce the number of asylum seekers in the US and also contributed to the decline in irregular immigration numbers. However, Mendez also declares that this policy unleashed a border crisis and affected vulnerable territories in Mexico such as Matamoros, where there were a large part of asylum seekers under the MPP.
He also states that, as long as immigrants entering the US under Biden’s plan have the genuine intention of seeking international protection and better opportunities, the resettlement program should be successful.
It is important to mention that on Friday, 25 asylum seekers had the opportunity to enter the US for the first time in months. However, this number may increase over the next few weeks.
