Border Forces Increasingly Apprehend Unaccompanied Minors
The Biden administration does not allow deportation of immigrant minors
There is a growing number of migrants trying to cross the US borders without legal documentation, including unaccompanied minors. Most migrants apprehended by border forces are returned almost immediately due to the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic and limitations still in place on grounds of sanitary emergency.
Under Joe Biden’s administration, border restrictions include most immigrants who try to cross the country’s borders without prior authorization, including people in need of international assistance, who plan to apply for political asylum or other humanitarian programs to protect their lives.
However, President Biden has stated on multiple occasions that his administration will not follow in the previous administration’s footsteps and will prevent the deportation of hundreds of immigrant minors amid the current juncture.
Therefore, border forces are following other guidelines and protocols to resettle unaccompanied immigrant minors apprehended at the borders. As required by local law, minors cannot be in the custody of border entities, in facilities such as border patrol stations or immigration detention centers, for more than 72 hours. Usually, they must be transferred to facilities of one of the branches of HHS (Department of Health and Human Services) called ORR (Office of Refugee Resettlement).

Hundreds of minors arrive at the borders
CBP (Customs and Border Protection), one of the entities in charge of protecting the US borders, has reported a growing number of unaccompanied immigrant minors apprehended at the borders and who, for the most part, are still in its custody.
Let’s see some relevant figures:
- At the end of February 2021, border forces had in their custody more than 1,200 unaccompanied minors.
- Border forces have encountered more than 300 unaccompanied minors at the US southern border on a daily basis.
- As of March 8, CBP already had approximately 3,200 immigrant minors in its custody and many of them had not been transferred to HHS facilities despite exceeding the time limit established by local law.
- On March 14, border forces reported that there were more than 4,200 unaccompanied immigrant minors at Border Patrol stations and approximately 3,000 of them had already exceeded 72 hours.
- Current figures are close to 4,500 minors in the custody of border forces.
The Biden administration is trying to act effectively to stem the flood of immigrants, reduce irregular immigration, improve local resettlement programs, and promote the first comprehensive immigration reform in decades.
