Border restrictions continue in the US – Use this time wisely!
Trump’s administration extends borders closure
Since the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the world, most countries have chosen to temporarily close borders to avoid importing and exporting the virus.
Therefore, international flights and in many cases national flights, were suspended for a specific period of time.
In the case of the North American territory, the Trump government closed the borders for all non-essential travel, which means that immigrants are not currently allowed to enter, nor the traffic of non-commercial vehicles between Canada, Mexico and US.
New government’s order
In late March 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended closing the US borders for at least 30 days.
Most countries set a specific date to reopen the borders and the last official statement from the current government of the US declared that the borders would reopen on May 21, 2020.
However, due to the alarming number of people infected with COVID-19 in the country, Trump’s administration decided to extend the closure of the borders.
The current problem is that a new date was not established or communicated to the public. Instead, what the government wants is to keep the borders closed indefinitely.
That is a giant threat to thousands of immigrant families, who are patiently waiting for an opportunity to apply for asylum or refuge at the borders of Mexico.
These families live in temporary shelters without medical supplies, proper hygiene, or food.
Immigrant rights advocates raise their voices
Several critics and immigrant rights advocates around the country have complained about the presidential order to keep the borders closed indefinitely.
They argue that the US has a duty to protect international human rights and offer political asylum to the neediest immigrants.
Critics declare that immigrant families seeking asylum are trying to flee the imminent danger of their countries and deserve an opportunity to build a promising future for coming generations.
Furthermore, they point out that the government is using the health crisis as an “excuse” to promote the reelection of Donald Trump.
There is insufficient evidence to ensure the veracity of that hypothesis. However, the current government of the US must evaluate the possibilities of reopening the borders as soon as possible.
The US workforce
The biggest concern of immigrant rights advocates is that the US market will feel a severe shortage without the foreign workforce.
Local markets constantly benefit from the help of foreign workers who are essential to overcome the current financial crisis, according to several critics and studies conducted around the country.
The positive side of the situation
For now, we must wait for the US government to reopen the borders and allow immigration again.
We must take advantage of this extra time to organize every immigration case in the best possible way and avoid rejections by the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).
Therefore, the best recommendation is to follow the guidance of immigration experts.
