Business Groups Call for Comprehensive Immigration Reform
Biden plans to restructure most immigration processes
Since Democratic President Joe Biden took office at the end of January 2021, a possible comprehensive immigration reform has been on the table and has created debate and controversy among the American population and within Congress, both in the US House of Representatives as in the Senate.
The Biden administration states that immigration reform is long overdue and absolutely necessary to repair the local immigration system and implement policies that are in line with current international needs and global interconnectivity.
One of the most important aspects of Biden’s immigration plans is to restructure most existing processes, including the US immigrant detention and deportation system, in order to offer a path to legal residence (whether temporary or permanent) or American citizenship to immigrants who meet certain eligibility requirements, who are essential workers in the midst of an unprecedented global health crisis.

Biden’s immigration proposal includes young immigrants
President Biden unveiled an immigration bill during his first days in office, which, if approved by Congress, would lead to comprehensive immigration overhaul and, among many other things, offer permanent solutions to so-called Dreamers, who are young immigrants who came to the US as minors.
Adding to that, several members of Congress have introduced or reintroduced other immigration bills that also support legalization for eligible young immigrants. In fact, the House of Representatives has already passed two immigration bills that would benefit Dreamers and undocumented farmworkers, but they still need Senate review to officially become law.
It is extremely important to understand that the reason why the Biden administration wants to legalize certain undocumented immigrants is not only because it supports foreigners or because it considers immigration to be an international advantage, but also because most of these individuals are now part of the social fabric and are essential workers in all kinds of sectors.
Currently, thousands of eligible Dreamers belong to a program called DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), which offers relief from deportation, but is a temporary benefit and does not guarantee their future in the US.
South Dakota businesses support immigration reform
Backing and supporting the Biden administration, dozens of American companies or businesses have raised their voices, stating that the presence of foreign workers, especially working-age populations like Dreamers, is essential to strengthen and boost the economy in times of crisis.
To give a specific example, the most important and influential business groups in South Dakota stated on Wednesday, May 19, that legalizing Dreamers should be a priority for the US, and urged Congress to support comprehensive immigration reform and pass immigration bills that protect young immigrants.
Some of the state groups involved in the petition are:
- Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
- Retailers Association.
- Dairy Producers.
These business groups state that immigration reform is essential to protect the country’s economy and international competitiveness. In fact, one of the members of these groups openly stated that “Dreamers are among the best and brightest in our country (…) These folks are contributors.”
