Business Leaders Support Comprehensive Immigration Reform
Midwest business leaders call for immigration reform
In the midst of a huge national debate related to immigration, a group of Midwest business leaders stated at a news conference that Congress must pass comprehensive immigration reform as soon as possible in order to effectively address workforce shortages in sectors tremendously devastated by the global Coronavirus pandemic.
Several business leaders emphasized the need to attract workers from abroad to supply the hospitality and agriculture industries. This clearly includes the US’ culinary and restaurant sector, which was tremendously affected by the national economic crisis brought on by the global pandemic.
Some of the states involved in this petition are Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa. Business leaders in this region openly state that the presence of immigrant workers is absolutely essential for these industries to meet current market demand, survive the downturn in revenues and overcome current challenges.
In fact, the CEO of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association argued, “I fear without the availability of employees, including immigrants, the recovery will take even longer”. She states that the number one challenge for the vast majority of restaurants in this area is the lack of employees, which could easily be addressed through immigration.

Immigration reform also includes undocumented immigrants
It is important to clarify that immigration reform is not only about improving and streamlining legal immigration processes, but it is also about immigrants currently residing in the US undocumented, a number that is currently close to 11 million.
Therefore, the national debate around immigration is also related to undocumented foreigners and the possibility of Congress allowing them to have a path to legalization, whether it be temporary residence, lawful permanent residence or American citizenship.
In fact, there are currently several immigration bills under Congressional review, which propose to offer a path to citizenship for Dreamers (young immigrants brought to the US as children), TPS (Temporary Protected Status) or DED (Deferred Enforced Departure) beneficiaries, foreign farm workers and undocumented essential workers.
That is one of the reasons why business leaders support comprehensive immigration reform, because it is not only about attracting workers from abroad, but also about being able to fill labor gaps as soon as possible, including immigrant workers who are already in the US, but who do not have documentation and therefore do not qualify to work legally.
