California Governor Extends Aid to Immigrants
California helps immigrants during the current juncture
The Trump administration, in an effort to protect the local population during the global pandemic, decided to issue stimulus checks to mitigate the impact of the economic crisis, ease the current unemployment rate and stimulate cash flow.
These stimulus checks offer monetary assistance to American families who lost their jobs due to the health crisis.
In addition to that, the current administration of the US has offered different aid during the current juncture. However, the Trump administration has emphasized, since the arrival of the pandemic in the North American territory, that undocumented immigrants should not have the right to receive monetary assistance, mainly because they violated local law and, therefore, must face consequences.
It is important to clarify that each state has the power and the right to distribute monetary aid to its preference. Therefore, there are several states that decided to help immigrants (with or without legal documentation) during the health crisis, arguing that excluding them would worsen the situation and increase the risk. One of those states is California.
In fact, California was the first state to allow undocumented immigrants to receive stimulus checks.

Now, California expands aid to undocumented immigrants
On Friday, September 18, 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law declaring that immigrants who do not yet have a Social Security Number (SSN) can apply for a tax credit.
Tax credit allows beneficiaries to request a reduction in the amount of taxes they owe to the local government.
California had declared in June that undocumented immigrants with children under the age of 6 could apply for this benefit. However, Governor Newsom removed this requirement last Friday.
Immigrants who do not have a SSN must show that they have worked and pay mandatory annual taxes in order to apply for the tax credit.

The California Governor’s arguments
Naturally, the California governor’s decision to offer tax credit to undocumented immigrants generated controversy among the American population.
However, Governor Newsom argues that offering this assistance during the current juncture is beneficial because:
- The economy is stimulated and in constant flux.
- Immigrants who make up a large portion of the local workforce can continue with their jobs during the health crisis, without affecting the state’s economic system.
