California is Protecting Undocumented Immigrants
Government aid during the pandemic
The Trump administration decided to deliver “Stimulus Check” to legal citizens across the country to ease the economic crisis caused by the pandemic.
Citizens requesting this check must meet certain requirements to be eligible and be able to obtain the monetary aid.
However, the current administration disagrees with the idea of offering these checks to undocumented immigrants.
In fact, President Trump suggested several measures to give this government aid only to legal citizens.
Let’s look at some of them:
- No undocumented immigrant should receive the stimulus check.
- If a citizen is married to an undocumented immigrant, they should not receive the check either.
- Children of “mixed families” (refers to a couple made up of a legal citizen and an undocumented immigrant) should not receive the stimulus check.
Despite government recommendations regarding stimulus checks, each state has the right to decide how to deliver the government monetary aid.
Therefore, some states decided to help immigrants, understanding that the current crisis must be overcome by everyone, not just by legal citizens.
That is the case of California.
California continues to help undocumented immigrants
California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, decided to help undocumented immigrants during the current juncture.
He literally states: “California is the most diverse state in the nation. Our diversity makes us stronger and more resilient. Every Californian, including our undocumented neighbors and friends, should know that California is here to support them during this crisis. We are all in this together.”
What the Governor offers is a one-time grant of $ 500 for each undocumented adult.
This program is known as Disaster Relief Assistance for Immigrants (DRAI). The governor announced that beginning May 18, eligible immigrants can request their monetary aid.
The eligibility requirements are the following:
- Immigrants must be over 18 years old.
- The person must demonstrate that he/she is an undocumented immigrant.
- They cannot be eligible for any other government aid related to Coronavirus.
- The immigrant must demonstrate that he/she does not have any other income due to the pandemic.
- They can receive a maximum of $ 1000 per household.
There will be no urgent cases for the delivery of this monetary aid. The checks will be issued on a first come, first served basis.
If you are in this situation, prepare your immigration case!
It is very favorable for immigrants to receive this monetary aid from California’s Governor during the current crisis.
However, it is also essential to obtain legal residence in the US as soon as possible to avoid deportation and to be able to work legally.
Therefore, this is the right time for you to seek genuine help and organize your immigration case in the best way possible with the guidance of an immigration expert.
Use this time wisely so that the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) approves your immigration request.
