California Lawmakers Call for Medical Assistance for Immigrants

Lawmakers urge California’s Governor to offer health coverage for immigrant communities

On Monday, December 7, 2020, California state legislators introduced two bills for Governor Gavin Newsom to approve medical assistance for all residents eligible for low-income programs, regardless of their immigration status.

The two lawmakers involved in this petition state that undocumented immigrants need health coverage during the sanitary crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic and urge Newsom to pass these bills to make California the first state to offer health care to undocumented immigrants.

Broadly speaking, lawmakers propose:

  • Expand the Medicaid program, which is a government health program for low-income people.
  • Have an additional $2.6 billion available annually to offer health coverage to eligible California residents, including undocumented immigrants.
  • The two bills are intended to initially protect older immigrants without documentation and then the rest of undocumented population in the state.
  • If Governor Newsom approves this petition, more than 915,000 undocumented immigrants would get medical assistance, which could reduce the massive Coronavirus outbreak in California as immigrant communities avoid seeking medical service for fear of deportation.

Governor Newsom has wanted to include undocumented immigrants in the low-income health program for a considerable period of time. However, unforeseen situations and the health crisis have not allowed the state to invest in this project.

Hence, legislators declare that “It’s a national issue. Look at how all the national Democratic candidates raised their hands in front of the world to support covering undocumented immigrants in health insurance (…) We want a clear commitment to finally do this, not just lip service.”
