California Supports Biden’s Immigration Reform
Biden’s immigration reform
The arrival of President-elect Joe Biden to the White House represents a drastic change for the US immigration system. It is no secret that former President Trump tried to reduce legal immigration and curb illegal immigration through restrictive policies, which were described as “arbitrary, draconian, capricious and invasive” on multiple occasions and that, many of them, led to the separation of immigrant families at the borders, the deportation of unaccompanied minors and the detention of asylum seekers.
For Biden’s team, immigration is also an extremely important and relevant issue, but in a more welcoming way. President Biden, during his political campaign, stated that immigration is a strength and advantage for the economy, social and cultural development, international competitiveness, important industries such as science and technology, and for American or US-based companies.
Adding to that, the current president, who took office on January 20, 2021, argues that the US must also offer humanitarian alternatives to the most vulnerable immigrant communities through programs such as political asylum and refuge.
Thus, in order to improve the immigration system and reverse Trump’s restrictive policies, the president-elect presented an immigration bill for Congress approval, which, if passed, would lead to a comprehensive immigration reform.

California supports Biden’s immigration bill
There is a growing controversy among members of different political parties and the American population regarding Biden’s immigration reform, mainly because, among many other proposals, it would outline a path to citizenship for the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants currently residing in the US.
As part of the immigration bill, President Biden states that most undocumented immigrants are essential workers, boost the economy, help the American population in times of crisis, and pay mandatory annual taxes, and therefore should have an opportunity to request legal documentation, as long as they meet the mandatory requirements and do not have a criminal record.
California is one of the states that strongly supports Biden’s immigration bill. Currently, there are approximately 3 million undocumented immigrants in California, who play an essential role in the economy.
In fact, according to a recent report by Cal Matters, a nonprofit journalism company, the reason why California is interested in President Joe Biden’s comprehensive immigration reform is because the state has a violent past regarding immigration and “The state’s supportive attitude toward its undocumented residents, most of whom came from Latin America, is itself a very recent development.”
The report reveals that after a history of war and nativism, California now protects its immigrant communities and hopes that the Biden administration will resolve once and for all the immigration controversy by implementing more humane policies, encouraging the multicultural inclusion and protecting the most vulnerable populations without affecting American citizens.
