Canada Fears Losing Migratory Competitiveness with Biden
Canada took advantage of Trump’s immigration policies
The US immigration system has undergone a significant transformation under the Trump administration, which implemented more than 400 changes on local policies in order to meet its goal of reducing, restricting and curbing immigration, both legal and illegal.
Aside from ideals of the current government when it comes to the immigration sector, the global Coronavirus pandemic allowed President Trump and his cabinet to considerably increase restrictions on legal immigration processes, massively deport undocumented immigrants and deny entry to the most vulnerable immigrant communities, such as asylum seekers.
Under the premise of a health crisis, governments had the opportunity and the right to implement strict and unconventional emergency measures, which, in the case of the US, led to a substantial reduction in immigration.
The Trump administration banned foreigners from entering the US during the sanitary emergency. With this, we refer to asylum seekers, tourists, highly qualified foreign workers, investors, refugees, Green Card holders (or permanent legal residence), relatives of American citizens, inter alia.
However, unlike the Trump administration, there are countries that tremendously support immigration and benefit greatly from foreign workforce and its contribution to socioeconomic development. That is the case of Canada.
In fact, in June 2020, Canada criticized the US for restricting business immigration in times of crisis, but stated that this was a gigantic benefit for local businesses as highly skilled foreign workers would choose to go there rather than to the US, which would boost its economy.
Canada could lose foreign talent with Biden
The 46th President of the US will be the Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who was elected by the American population on November 3, 2020.
The president-elect and his cabinet have a diametrically opposite view to Trump’s when it comes to the immigration sector. Biden states that foreign workforce is extremely beneficial to the local economy and plans to remove Trump’s restrictions on business immigration.
Therefore, on December 15, the Governor of the Bank of Canada stated that the incoming Biden administration could attract talent from abroad and hurt the economy of Canadian companies, so the country will have to adopt strategies to protect the migratory competitiveness that it has gained during the term of Donald Trump.
In fact, he stated: “With the incoming US administration, Canadian schools and companies may have to fight harder to attract and retain talent. But being a welcoming country remains an important advantage, and immigration creates economic capacity. We need to focus on ensuring that Canada maintains a well-educated, multinational workforce to attract foreign investment, leading to increased exports.”
