Canada is Exempted from Current Visa Restrictions
The Trump administration bans entry of foreign workers
In light of the threat caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic and the alarming number of infected people in the US, the Trump government decided to implement new restrictions for foreign workers.
The Trump administration has barred specialized foreign workers from entering the country for the remaining of the year, and the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) is not allowed to issue work visas.
In the opinion of Trump’s government, suspending the entry of foreigners benefits the country during the current juncture for several reasons:
- Due to the current unemployment rate, available job positions should be offered only to the local population and not to foreigners. This will help boost the economy.
- Restricting the entry of foreign workers protects local resources of the US market.
- Trump’s government considers that the wages offered to foreigners are normally higher than those of local citizens, therefore, those wages should be offered to the American population during the current health crisis.
Despite the stringency of restrictions implemented on the US work permits, there are several exceptions to the measures.

Canadian Citizens do not need to worry about the restrictions
Canada is exempt from current restrictions on foreign skilled workers. That means that Canadian citizens who want to come to the US with a work permit can do so as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.
Other than that, President Trump clarified that family members of Canadians holding work visas are also exempt from border restrictions and can submit a request to come to the country.
The current administration of the US also explained the importance of maintaining active economic ties with Canada and how these two countries are essential to overcome the economic crisis generated by the global pandemic.
Other exceptions to the new restrictions
Aside from Canada being exempted from restrictions on work visas, there are other exceptions to the measures.
For instance, any industry related to the US food supply chain is allowed to request foreign workers.
That includes, but is not limited to:
- Foreign agricultural workers.
- Foreign workers who supply food to local markets around the country.
- Food transporters.
- Food packaging industry.
In addition to that, foreign workers who currently have legal work permits and reside in the US will not be affected by the measures implemented by Trump’s government. They can continue residing in the country as long as their work permit is valid.
