Census Results Are Also Related to Immigration
The lowest population growth in decades
American citizens must participate in the National Census every 10 years, which is used to, among other things, analyze population growth in relation to the economy and population density of each state, as well as to distribute seats in Congress and allocate federal funds.
The US Census Bureau recently released the 2020 National Census results, which showed quite peculiar variables. The local birth rate dropped considerably over the last decade and population growth was only 7.4%, a fairly low figure compared to past decades.
In fact, this is the lowest population growth since 1930, eight decades ago, and the second lowest in Census history. This figure represents a gigantic threat to the economy mainly because, if the US does not do something to increase the population density in general, by the end of the decade there will be more retirement-age population than working-age population.
In order to solve the social gap and the low population growth of the last decade, several experts and researchers emphasize the need to increase immigration levels as soon as possible. At this point, and taking into account the Census results, immigration is the most effective way to boost the economy in times of crisis and increase the local birth rate and population growth.

Immigration also influenced the Census results
It is extremely important to clarify that not only is it necessary for the US government to improve the immigration system to simplify existing processes, but that immigration itself was also a very influential factor in the 2020 National Census results.
As a matter of fact, according to a recent Forbes report, the local birth rate and the fact that American families no longer see having children as a priority is not the only cause of the last decade’s low population growth, but a substantial decrease in immigration levels also impacted and affected this figure.
This is because, since the founding of the country, the presence of foreigners has been fundamental, not only for population density, but also for the growth of local companies, job creation, entrepreneurship projects and innovative ideas, the US food supply chain, inter alia.
Therefore, because the Donald Trump administration (2017-2021) wanted to restrict immigration by all possible means and made more than 400 changes to local immigration policies, which narrowed alternatives available to foreigners, immigration levels decreased considerably, as did population growth.
Adding to that, the sudden arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic also allowed the Trump government to restrict immigration even more, suspending the issuance of most visas and closing borders indefinitely, which also contributed to the low population growth of the last decade.
