Central American Entities Try to Stop Immigrant Caravans
Precarious situations force Central Americans to migrate to the US
The so-called “third world countries” felt a stronger impact from the sudden arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic, which unleashed not only a health crisis, but also an economic, social and, in some cases, a political crisis.
For instance, most Central American countries are going through humanitarian crises because:
- The economic system is unstable.
- There are not enough local resources to counteract the impact of the pandemic.
- The unemployment rate skyrocketed during the massive Coronavirus outbreak.
- The health system cannot withstand a massive health emergency.
Adding to that, apart from the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Central American territory also felt the impact of several natural disasters during November 2020, leaving thousands of people affected, without access to basic services and without employment or economic resources, who are looking for opportunities in other countries and need international protection.
Therefore, precarious situations in Central America are forcing people to migrate to the US, where they have the possibility to build a promising future for their families, find job and economic stability, protect their integrity from danger and insecurity of their countries and flee from natural disasters.
However, many of them attempt to cross the borders, of both Central America and the US, without legal documentation or prior authorization, which could lead to deportation or detention by border forces, putting their integrity at risk.

Central American authorities stop migrant caravans
A new immigrant caravan from Honduras began its journey to the US last week. However, on Thursday, December 10, 2020, Central American authorities implemented a strategy to stop the caravan and prevent it from reaching North America.
Let’s see the action plan of Central American countries:
- Honduras: Honduran authorities have different checkpoints across the country to stop migrant caravans and prevent them from reaching the borders.
Adding to that, they returned a bus with approximately 50 people who were trying to reach the US to request international protection.
Honduran authorities are trying to convince immigrants to return home and protect themselves from the Coronavirus pandemic. - Guatemala: The Guatemalan authorities will not allow immigrants who do not have a recent Coronavirus test (negative) and a valid passport to cross the borders. If they do not meet these requirements, they will have to return to their countries.
Adding to that, Guatemalan authorities will intercept and disperse immigrants who try to cross the borders without legal documentation.
Immigrants state that they are trying to go to the US because they do not have opportunities in their countries and need to protect their beloved ones. They hope that President-elect, Joe Biden, and his cabinet will offer them opportunities to migrate.
