Changes Implemented by the Trump Administration on Immigration
The current government’s plans
Since President Trump took office in 2017, his administration has been relentlessly focused on reducing immigration in general. By this, we refer to the fact that the Trump government has always wanted to decrease both illegal and legal immigration.
That is why over the past three years, the current administration of the US has implemented more than 400 changes in the immigration sector, making it one of the most immigration-focused governments in recent history.
President Trump argues that mass immigration greatly hurts the country for multiple reasons.
Let’s see some of them:
- Undocumented immigrants increase clandestine work and “bad social habits”.
- Immigrant communities tend to use government benefits disproportionately without giving anything back to the country.
- Immigrants use free health and medical services, and in the opinion of the current government, these are benefits that should be available only to the American population.
- Illegal immigration is an unnecessary burden on the country’s economic system.
- Mass legal immigration reduces the number of jobs available for American citizens, increasing the local unemployment rate and affecting local families.
Nowadays, with the arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic to the North American territory, the Trump administration has increased restrictions and requirements for immigrants.
This includes foreigners who have investment, business and study plans in the US. The Trump government has received countless criticism from activists and experts who claim that socio-economic development depends heavily on foreign intervention.
The Trump administration’s promises for the immigration sector
President Trump is seeking re-election in November 2020 and launched a virtual platform called “Promises made, promises kept”, which shows the changes implemented during the last 3 years in different important sectors of society such as economy, employment , national security, agriculture, law and justice, immigration, inter alia.
In the immigration section, the current administration exposes the multiple changes implemented during the term of President Trump.
Let’s see some of them:
- The construction of the border wall that separates the US from Mexico.
- Cancellation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Despite the fact that the US Supreme Court of Justice ruled in favor of this program in June 2020, the current government is still not receiving new applications. - President Trump disqualified sanctuary cities (which offer protection to undocumented immigrants) from receiving federal funds.
- The Trump administration hired 10,000 ICE employees, 5,000 of them dedicated to guarding and protecting borders.
- The implementation of the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), also known as “Remain in Mexico”.
Broadly speaking, this policy states that asylum seekers must remain in Mexico until they receive a response to their immigration applications.
