Controversy in New Mexico over Trump’s Border Wall
The border wall as a political ideal
Immigration has always been a fundamental pillar of the political identity of President Donald Trump. Since the president announced his candidacy for the 2016 elections, he has proposed and implemented a large number of changes, measures, requirements and restrictions in the immigration sector.
The Trump government is primarily focused on reducing illegal immigration from Central America. In fact, one of its most striking proposals is the border wall that separates the US from Mexico.
In the Trump administration’s view, undocumented immigrants tend to travel in caravans to cross the country’s borders without prior authorization, violating local law. Therefore, the purpose of the border wall is to:
- Reduce massive illegal immigration.
- Help federal entities to protect borders.
- Safeguard essential resources.
- Avoid clandestine work.
- Have an accurate figure of how many people reside in the US.
The Trump administration’s plan is to build 753 miles of wall to permanently close land borders with Central America, except for authorized ports of entry, where immigrants can request legal entry.
However, according to official figures from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the border wall is currently 317 miles long.

New Mexico has divided opinions regarding the border wall
New Mexico is one of the states that borders Mexico and where the Trump administration has built 31 miles of border wall.
A recent poll conducted by Research & Polling Inc shows that New Mexicans have widely divided opinions when it comes to Trump’s border wall.
The survey results show that:
- On the one hand, 52% of voters believe that the construction of the wall should stop. On the other hand, 38% of voters support the construction of the wall and 10% are neither in favor nor against.
- Most Democrats disapprove the idea of building a border wall, while most Republicans support it.
Aside from the construction of the border wall, the survey also includes a deportation question.
The main findings of this section are as follows:
- Voters who disagree with the border wall tend to believe that the US government should deport only undocumented immigrants who pose a threat to the local population or who have a history of crime.
- Voters who agree with the border wall tend to support stricter deportation policies and argue that foreigners who cross the country’s borders without legal documentation should face deportation proceedings.
At the same time, the responses are divided between the population that supports the reelection of President Trump and the population that supports the Democratic nominee Joe Biden (for the elections that will take place in November, 2020).
Therefore, as we can notice, opinion in New Mexico regarding the border wall, deportation policies and immigration is divided, and it might intervene in the upcoming elections.
